Creation, Control & Consumption

Delving into the perspectives of music artists, industry professionals, record labels, and consumers; and exploring my artistry and the future of the industry hands-on.

Project TitlePerspectives of The Music Industry: Creation, Control & Consumption
Section 1: Rationale
During this course I’ve immersed myself in the music community at my college, spending my time learning new skills, rehearsing with other talented musicians and building meaningful connections that have deepened my understanding of performance and production.

When I started this course, I had an extremely basic knowledge of music production but good stage performance skills, but I didn’t know much about actually building a career and flourishing in the industry.

I wanted to explore all the different paths available to me as well as getting to know the landscape of the music industry as well as learn about its past, present and future.
Section 2: Project Concept
With my Final Major Project, I want to learn more about the past, present and future of creating music and how it has evolved into the massive industry it is today. I want to explore the life cycle of a song and how its taken from an idea to a release.

I will achieve this by researching heavily into the past, present and future of each of the three perspectives I have chosen to look at (artists, the industry and consumers) by conducting interviews and reading about people’s experiences as well as trying my hand at as many possible components in practise i.e. Production, Songwriting, Recording a demo, DJing assisting professionals in the studio, working backstage at a concert etc.

I will end up producing a collection of smaller-scale outputs such as learning to play parts on instruments, songwriting and recording lyrics, plotting midi keys, producing and mixing, and then looking at everything from the perspective of a record label and then consumer. This will come together in my Final Creative Outcome: “Lifecycle of a Song” and how it goes from being birthed by artists, chewed up by the industry and spat at and consumed by the public.
Section 2: Evaluation
During the evaluation process I will be doing a deep introspection and asking myself: What went well, what I would improve and think about what I learned about the industry as well as myself. I will use Rolfe et al.’s Reflective Model to present this(What happened? What did you learn? What will you do differently in the future?) I will also get feedback from my tutors.

Artists Note:
This project is in itself a reflection of the highs and lows of the creative process. There were moments of inspiration but also burnout and organization problems as this project was done while experiencing fresh grief and bouts of poor mental health. While some sections could be completed to a higher standard, I stayed committed to the project and explored my creativite self and researched as much as I could. I have included all of the content I was able to produce, and I hope it is an honest working towards the brief. Thank you for reading.
